Dr. Eric Schertel grew up in California, where he earned his BS, DVM, and PhD from UC Davis. In 1987, he relocated to Ohio with his wife to complete a residency in small animal surgery at The Ohio State University. He joined the faculty at the veterinary school and, two years later, also held a position within the medical school.
In 1999, Dr. Schertel left OSU to join Bill DeHoff at MedVet as a partner. Under the guidance of DeHoff, a respected founder and mentor, he stepped into the role of managing partner within a year. During his leadership, MedVet expanded significantly, growing to 30 hospitals by the time he retired in 2019. Since then, he has remained involved with the organization as a board member and advisor to the CEO.
